I love to have fun with words and word patterns. The idea for Zoodles came to me when I noticed that "kangaroo" and "rooster" had similar word patterns. "Kangaroo" ended with "roo" and "rooster" began with "roo." I put "kangaroo" and "rooster" together and came up with a funny-sounding "kangarooster."
I discovered other animals that ended and began with the same letters, and I made a list of funny-sounding combinations: pig and iguana: "piguana"; flamingo and goat: "flamingoat"; hippopotamus and muskrat: "hippopotamuskrat."
Then I made up riddles for these unusual combinations. "What do you call a kangaroo that wakes you up in the morning?" Answer: "A kangarooster!"
The title was a natural for a book filled with animal riddles... Zoodles! It gives me great pleasure to see some of the school projects Zoodles has inspired.
