This was my third published book.
For me, the essence of a book is turning the pages to see what is on the next page. This is the concept behind Turn Over, designed for very young readers. On the first page I ask, "Do you know why Amy is crying?" She is on roller skates and there's a tear going down her cheek. At the bottom of the page I invite the reader to "turn over."
When you turn the page you see the exact same image of Amy but from the other side. You discover that "she tore her new pants while learning to roller skate."
On another page I ask, "Do you know why Joey is laughing so hard?" Joey has his hands covering his face and is giggling. When you turn the page you discover Joey's dog behind him and read "his dog is wagging his tail and tickling Joey's neck."
At the end of Turn Over there is a little boy in pajamas with his hands behind his back. "Do you know why Andrew looks so sad?" When you turn over you see that Andrew is holding a book behind him and you discover "this book is over and it's time for you to turn over and go to sleep."
One experience I will never forget happened on a school visit to Gahanna, Ohio many years ago. My hosts were giving me a tour of their school. Every kindergarten class door had a giant blow-up of a page from Turn Over on it. The door was the page. You had to open the door to read the other side. My book was brought to life!
Unfortunately, Turn Over is out of print. Someday I hope to have it published again. Persistence!
