It's hard to imagine how big some of the dinosaurs really were. In this book, I compare these giant dinosaurs' sizes with things children are familiar with: "Tyrannosaurus Rex was so big, some of its teeth were as big as your toothbrush. I wonder how many tubes of toothpaste it would take to brush this monster's teeth?"
"Stegosaurus was so big, the plates on its back were larger than a school crossing sign." (The shape of a stegosaurus plate actually resembles a school crossing sign).
"Supersaurus was so big, it was longer than a supermarket aisle. How about calling this dinosaur Supermarketsaurus?" I actually went to several local supermarkets and measured the longest aisles. I pretended I was shopping as I walked the length of the aisles using my "foot" as a ruler.
Another dinosaur was so big, it was about as long as a basketball court. I illustrated this dinosaur playing basketball with children while it slam-dunks its head and tail at the same time.
My publisher suggested a three-page pull-out for the biggest dinosaur ever discovered. I thought that was a great idea, but I still remember how difficult it was to illustrate, because my drawing was wider than my drawing board!
