We were reading a book together at bedtime about monsters (he loved books about monsters), when Eric asked me, "Are there any monsters who are afraid of children?" That gave me the idea for Boo!, about a little monster who is so terrified of children that he has nightmares that children are chasing him.
I encourage the reader to participate in various places by inviting them to try scaring the little monster. ("Boo!") With the help of the reader, the little monster conquers his fear, and at the end of the book, "The little monster scares happily ever after! Boo!"
Sadly, Boo! is out of print. But every once in awhile on school visits, I get a big thrill when a librarian shows me a "well-read" copy of Boo! and tells me how much children like it. I believe in persistence, and I have hopes that someday someone will re-publish Boo!
